For a stretch of the late fifties and sixties, the Impala was the best-selling car in America, and looking at one it is easy to understand why. The 1958–61 cars are pure jet-age theatre — the 1959's cat's-eye tail lamps and horizontal batwing fins remain among the most audacious shapes Detroit ever produced — while the 1961–64 cars settle into a cleaner, crisper look with the triple round tail lights that became a Chevrolet signature. The SS package added buckets, a console, a tachometer and firmer suspension, and the engine list runs from the docile 283 through the 327 and 409 up to the 427. They are long, low, wide, comfortable cars that cruise a highway beautifully.

This car belongs to Chevrolet's full-size line, where the L72 427 turned an ordinary family car into one of the quickest things the division sold. Engine code, drivetrain originality and paperwork matter as much to that lineage as the headline power figure.
