Chevrolet Corvette 454 LS5

The C3 ran from 1968 all the way to 1982, the longest production run of any Corvette generation, and it wears the most theatrical bodywork of the lot: fender flares over the wheels, a pinched waist, a long nose and a tail that ends abruptly in four round lamps. Underneath, it kept the C2's chassis and independent rear end, so the driving experience is familiar, but the cabin is lower, wider and considerably more dramatic. Early cars are the ones enthusiasts chase — 1968–72 chrome-bumper examples with big-block 427 and 454 motors, removable T-tops and, on the 1968–69 cars, a rear window you could lift out and stow behind the seats. From 1973 emissions rules and 5 mph bumper standards softened the output, but the shape stayed magnetic, and the later cars are among the most accessible ways into genuine V8 Corvette ownership.
