Chevrolet Corvette Pace Car Convertible

The C4 was a total clean-sheet redesign and the first Corvette engineered with computers rather than clay alone. It introduced a uniframe structure, a clamshell hood that hinges forward to expose the entire engine bay, and — famously — an all-digital instrument panel glowing with bar graphs and numerals, which felt like the future in 1984 and now reads as gloriously period-correct. Handling was the real story: contemporary road tests recorded skidpad numbers among the highest ever measured for a production car, thanks to a fibreglass transverse-leaf suspension and enormous tyres. The L98 tuned-port 350 arrived in 1985 and the six-speed ZF manual in 1989; the 1992 LT1 finally pushed output back to 300 hp. These are quick, comfortable, superb-value classics with a driving position that puts you right on the floor.
