Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray 327 Fuel Injection

The 1963–67 Sting Ray is, for a great many collectors, the single most beautiful shape General Motors ever signed off on. Bill Mitchell's design took its cues from the Mako Shark show car and a mid-1950s racing special, and it arrived with the Corvette's first independent rear suspension — a transverse leaf spring and half-shaft arrangement that transformed the car's manners. Under the hood the 327 small-block ranged from a docile 250 hp up to the 375 hp Ramjet fuel-injected L84; from 1965 the big-block 396 and then the 427 arrived, culminating in the tri-power L71 435 hp motor with its trio of Holley two-barrels. Four-wheel disc brakes came in 1965, side-mount exhaust was on the option sheet, and the coupe's stacked headlights rotate out of the nose on an electric motor. Values for these cars have moved in one direction for forty years.

This car belongs to the mid-year Corvette line, where Chevrolet paired the first independent rear suspension with the small-block V8. Engine code, drivetrain originality and documentation matter as much to that lineage as any single horsepower figure.
