Dodge Viper RT/10

The Viper began as a Detroit auto show concept nobody expected to be built, and the production car that followed was almost as uncompromising as the show car: an 8.0-litre V10 derived from a truck engine and lightened by Lamborghini, a six-speed manual, and a chassis with no anti-lock brakes, no traction control and — on the earliest cars — no exterior door handles, no side windows and no proper roof. Side-exit exhausts run under the sills and get hot enough to brand your calf. It makes 400 hp and 465 lb-ft in first-generation form, and it is one of the last genuinely analogue supercars anyone built.

This car is the first-generation Viper, built with deliberately few concessions: a V10 derived from a truck engine, a six-speed manual and none of the driver aids its rivals fitted. Specification, originality and condition matter as much to that lineage as the headline power figure.
