Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner

The Fairlane 500 Skyliner did something no mass-produced car had done before: it folded its entire steel roof into the trunk at the touch of a button. The mechanism used seven electric motors, ten solenoids, ten limit switches and roughly 185 metres of wiring, and the front section of the roof hinged so it would clear the deck. It was complicated, it was expensive, it consumed almost the entire trunk, and Ford built it for only three model years — but when it works, it remains one of the great pieces of automotive theatre.

This car is Ford's retractable hardtop, the first mass-produced car able to fold its entire steel roof into the trunk. Mechanism condition, restoration quality and originality matter as much to that lineage as the headline power figure.
