Ford Model 48 Phaeton

The Model 48 is Ford's 1935 range, and it matters because it carried the flathead V8 that Henry Ford had introduced three years earlier — the first V8 engine ever placed in a car ordinary people could afford. A Phaeton body is the open four-door style: no fixed side glass, side curtains rather than windows, a folding fabric roof and a body that seats five in the open air. They are rare survivors, because open bodies were the first to rot and the first to be cut up for hot rods.

This car carries Ford's flathead V8, the first V8 engine offered in a car ordinary buyers could afford, in the open four-door Phaeton body. Body style, survival rate and originality matter as much to that lineage as the headline power figure.
