Lincoln Continental

The 1961 Continental is one of the great acts of restraint in American car design — Elwood Engel's slab-sided sedan arrived when everyone else was still bolting on fins, and it looked a decade ahead. The rear-hinged back doors are the signature detail, and the four-door convertible built on this platform is the only one any American manufacturer offered in the postwar era. Lincoln backed the car with an unheard-of two-year, 24,000-mile warranty because every single one was road-tested before delivery. The 430 and later 462 cu in V8 provides silent, enormous torque.

This car sits in Lincoln's Engel-era Continental line, the slab-sided design that arrived when rivals were still fitting fins. Originality, recorded distance and condition matter as much to that lineage as the headline power figure.
