Lincoln Premiere Convertible

The Premiere was Lincoln's top model in the mid-fifties, sitting on a new unitised platform with ball-joint front suspension and powered by a 368 cu in V8 making 285 hp — enormous figures for 1956. The styling is crisp and wide, with hooded headlights, a broad eggcrate grille and modest, tasteful fins that grew for 1957. Inside, it is one of the most generously equipped American cars of its moment: power steering, power brakes, power windows and a four-way power seat were standard or near-standard.

This car sits in Lincoln's post-war luxury line, where Ford's senior division answered Cadillac with unitised construction, long wheelbases and heavy standard equipment rather than outright sportiness. Presentation, chrome work and interior appointment matter as much to that lineage as any performance figure.
