History:
The Pagoda was introduced in 1963, succeeding the 300 SL and 190 SL. Its distinctive pagoda-shaped hardtop gave the model its famous nickname. Available as the 230 SL, 250 SL and later 280 SL, it became an iconic Mercedes-Benz roadster, renowned for its excellent balance between comfort and sportiness. Introduced in 1968, the 280 SL was fitted with the most powerful 2.8-litre engine in the range.
This example was first registered in California, USA, on September 15, 1969. The current owner acquired the car in 2018 and imported it through a renowned Belgian Pagoda specialist with an established reputation in the market.
The car was registered in France as a historic vehicle the following year.
Condition:
This Pagoda is presented in good overall condition.
The bodywork presents well, with good panel alignment. The paintwork is well finished. There are a few signs of use, consistent with the car's age. The black soft top was replaced in 2024 and is in like-new condition. The car is accompanied by its original hardtop.
Inside, the beige leather upholstery is very well preserved. The gauges and dashboard instruments are fully functional.
The inline 6-cylinder engine starts readily and delivers strong torque. It has recently undergone a comprehensive service in July 2025, including an engine oil change, new spark plugs, installation of an electronic ignition system (the original distributor is retained), and an automatic gearbox oil change. Gear changes are smooth and seamless. All four shock absorbers were replaced in 2019.
