Other Mercury Eight

The Mercury Eight was Ford's mid-range answer to Buick and Oldsmobile, and the 1946–48 cars carry a heavy, rounded shape that made them the single most popular canvas for custom car builders in history. Chop the roof, remove the chrome, lower the suspension and lead in the seams and you have the archetypal lead sled. In original form they are handsome, dignified cars with a 239 cu in flathead V8, a column-shift three-speed and a cabin trimmed in cloth and painted steel. A business coupe is the two-door with no rear seat — built for travelling salesmen and their sample cases.

This car is the post-war Mercury Eight, the shape that became the most popular canvas in American custom car building. Originality, body condition and presentation matter as much to that lineage as the headline power figure.
