Story:
Few 911s embody Porsche’s heritage as purely as the Porsche 911 Speedster. It is a 911 from the same era as the 930 generation and represents the last open-top 911 with the iconic “G-body”.
The end of an era, therefore. The 911 Speedster pays tribute to the 356 Speedster of the 1950s, which achieved legendary status by winning races including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio. Ultimately, the 911 Speedster was produced for just one year, with only 2,102 examples leaving the factory.
One of the Speedster’s defining features is its windscreen, which sits considerably lower than usual. As a result, the roofline is also lower when the soft top is raised. With the roof down, the distinctive “double bubble” behind the seats is revealed. The roof itself cannot simply be operated at the touch of a button. The technology had simply not progressed that far at the time, and a manually operated roof is, of course, the lightest solution. Even the modern Speedster features a manually operated roof.
The example you see here is finished in the beautiful Indisch Rot, a colour that perfectly accentuates the timeless lines of the Speedster. Thanks to the highly desirable Turbo Look specification, this Speedster features the wide bodywork, muscular appearance and characteristic Fuchs wheels that give it an even sportier presence. This factory Turbo Look specification was delivered without the fixed front and rear spoilers of the 911 Turbo, allowing the elegant lines of the Speedster to remain completely intact. The combination of the red exterior and black details creates a classic appearance that is every bit as impressive today as it was in 1989.
The interior is also presented in exceptionally fine condition. The black leather interior forms a stylish contrast with the exterior and is equipped with an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and seat heating—expensive options at the time that significantly enhance comfort. The original Blaupunkt radio is still supplied with the car, while a modern Porsche Classic infotainment unit is currently fitted. This provides the car with navigation, Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity without compromising the original appearance of the dashboard.
The technical heart of the car is the highly regarded air-cooled 3.2-litre six-cylinder boxer engine, producing 231 hp and sending its power to the rear wheels through the refined G50 five-speed manual gearbox. This Speedster is also equipped with the desirable short shifter, providing shorter gear changes and an even more direct driving experience. It also features a 40% limited-slip differential, further benefiting traction and handling. In addition, the car is equipped with ABS, a modern and expensive safety option at the time. This combination is renowned for its reliability, direct character and mechanical driving experience. With a kerb weight of approximately 1,200 kilograms, every drive feels pure, analogue and remarkably engaging. The distinctive sound of the air-cooled boxer engine turns every kilometre into an experience.
With a mileage of just 89,000 kilometres, this Speedster remains in exceptionally well-preserved condition. The car presents exactly as a collectible Porsche should and represents a wonderful opportunity for the enthusiast seeking one of the most iconic open-top Porsches ever built.
An air-cooled 911 Speedster only rarely appears on the market, particularly in this highly sought-after Turbo Look specification. A timeless design, an impressive history and a driving experience that has become exceptionally rare in the modern automotive landscape. A car for the true enthusiast and collector.
